The World’s Greatest High Wire Act
A mini story by Lisa Bartell
Adele Rose was the headline act of the high wire. No one could compete with the mystery and magic of her performance.
It was very early in the 1930’s, when the world began to feel discomfort but didn’t realize why. Adele Rose brought excitement and possibilities to large crowds of every age, momentarily making them suspend their fear of what tomorrow might bring. She performed across the United States and in the great cities of Europe: Paris, London and Berlin. These were the years before the monster came to power and the innocent were killed.
When Adele Rose began her ascent up the ladder and gently stepped upon the wire, the audience sat with intense wonderment. The immensity of her imagination conjured up a colorful menagerie of creatures. These familiar yet unknown images joined in her act, appearing and disappearing in space. People gasped with awe wondering at the magic they were seeing. The pictures of her miraculous performance left them questioning what was real. Adele Rose seemed to wave a wand of magic through space, giving life to the stories in her mind.
Why does the fable of the greatest high wire act continue to this day? Was Adele Rose telling us that each mind has unlimited stories and dreams? Was she telling us not to be controlled by dogma and dishonesty? Perhaps her legend is telling us to be courageous as we walk across our own high wire.
